A Healthy Toothbrush For St Louis Kids

As a parent of active St Louis children, I’m sure you’re always on the lookout for places where germs lurk, and you probably know that toothbrushes have the potential to grow a lot of bacteria. However, there are some simple rules you can follow in your St. Charles area home to keep your child’s toothbrush (and your kid’s mouth) as healthy as possible.

One of the best ways to limit bacterial growth on a toothbrush is to allow it to dry completely between uses. This is best done by storing the toothbrush in a toothbrush holder on the counter, not tucked away in a drawer where air flow is limited.

A toothbrush holder is superior to a cup because it’s important that neighboring toothbrushes don’t touch and share germs.

Air drying toothbrushes is easy when you purchase two for each child at your nearest St Louis drugstore. Teach your kids to alternate between the two so they each have more time to dry out all the way.

Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months, mainly because normal wear and tear will make them less effective at cleaning teeth. But, regardless of the age of the toothbrush, replace it after your child has a cold or other illness.

Dehydration Can Trigger Tantrums In St Louis

Most St Louis parents have experienced a tantrum or meltdown with their children. My kids usually lose it when they are hungry or need a nap. Some kids flip out if their routine is altered. My St Louis co-worker claims her kids get crazy when there is a full moon.

Lack of sleep and low blood sugar are the usual suspects causing irritability in my St Louis child, but a new study in the Journal of Nutrition points the finger at another culprit.¹ Dehydration seems to lead to a low mood in healthy women. The study only included young women, but I did a little experiment on my own kids and noticed when they were mildly dehydrated they were fatigued and irritable.

One way to ensure your family makes good food choices is to shop and stock your pantry with healthy food in mind. Before you head out to your local St Louis super market, sit down and make a healthy shopping list. Even if you are confident that you know what you need, taking the time to write it out will help you plan meals, make healthy choices, and avoid impulse buys.

Once you are in the store, stick to your list and pick up the healthy items first. Health Benefits of St Louis…Dirt!

Most St Louis parents know about the health benefits of gardening as a family: spending time outdoors, working together, establishing a connection to the food we eat, better nutrition, and many more.

Something not so well known in St Louis is that the dirt itself contains beneficial bacteria that can aid in depression, cognitive functioning, and even in fighting some cancers.

Working with soil in St Louis – digging, pulling weeds, harvesting vegetables – exposes Missouri kids and parents to a strain of bacteria called mycobacterium vaccae. Recent research reveals that m. vaccae triggers the release of seratonin, which can elevate mood and reduce stress.

In one study, two groups of mice were fed peanut butter sandwiches before finding their way through a difficult maze. One of the groups had m. vaccae spread on the sandwiches. The mice that ingested the bacteria ran the maze twice as fast and exhibited half as many stress behaviors as the mice that didn’t have the bacteria.

Think of St Louis kids in the ‘good ole’ days,’ running around on unpaved roads, playing in meadows, forests, and dirt piles, and half of the time probably bare-foot. It is quite a different childhood than the sanitized version that exists in our society today. Children not only need more time out-of-doors, but they need to get dirty! Let your St Louis neighbors hear you yell: ‘Kids, go outside and get dirty!’

Florissant, Westport , and St. Charles parents may do themselves and their children a favor by adding to their kids’ emotional, physical, and intellectual health by letting them play in the dirt!

St Louis parents who think their six year-old doesn’t need to be in a booster seat may be surprised to learn that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that children stay in a booster seat until their height and weight exceed the manufacturer’s limits.

Podcast Basics For St. Charles MLM Business Bloggers

A podcast is a multimedia file that is downloaded for playback on a mobile device such as an iPod or laptop computer. It can be a digital recording of a radio program or, more often, a program produced solely for online distribution. A podcast can be a recording of a webcast: a live St. Charles program that is ‘streamed’ or broadcast on the internet in real time. When this is the case, it is similar to a DVD recording of a live program that you store in the database of your playback device.
